A NURSE at the Alexandra Hospital has died after developing the symptoms of coronavirus.

Julie Omar, who was 52, had been self-isolating at her home, but her condition deteriorated and she died there on Friday, April 10.

In a video statement Trust chief executive Matthew Hopkins paid tribute to Mrs Omar, a Sister on Ward 14, who was married with one daughter.

He praised her as a ‘much loved member of our nurse team’, describing her as a ‘dedicated and highly experienced skilled trauma and orthopaedic nurse’ and said how much he enjoyed chatting to her on his visits to the Alex. The news comes on a day – Saturday, April 11 – when the Trust revealed five more people had died from coronavirus in its hospitals, bringing the total to 84 deaths.

The Trust said the patients whose deaths have been announced so far were aged between 41 and 98.

In his statement addressed to staff at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, Mr Hopkins added: “I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your continuing and great efforts to make sure we can meet the needs of the growing number of patients within our hospitals with Covid-19.”

He said he recognised staff concerns about the need for personal protective equipment and said the Trust was working with a number of suppliers – including the Army – to ensure staff had proper protection.
