Rubery's Sally to take on 26-mile trek in Northumberland to raise funds for Alzheimer's Society

A RUBERY woman will trek 26 miles in Northumberland to raise funds for The Alzheimer’s Society.

Sally Beckett is currently training for her next walking challenge which will take place on May 24 and is hoping to raise at least £300 for the cause.

Sally is no stranger to walking challenges and has previously taken on testing treks for the Birmingham Children’s Hospital (BCH) and Marie Curie, raising thousands of pounds in the process.

These two charities and the Alzheimer’s Society are close to Sally and husband Derek’s hearts. In 2009 one of their grandchildren, Charlie, had a serious heart condition at birth which required surgery when he was just a few weeks old.

She said: “The surgical team and staff at BCH were magnificent.

“Today, Charlie is a healthy young man with a great future ahead of him.”

Previous treks

Sally has trekked up Snowdon, trekked the coast to coast path from St Bee’s in Cumbria to Robin Hood’s Bay in Yorkshire and, last July, walked up Ben Nevis for the BCH.

Marie Curie looked after the couple’s daughter’s mother-in-law and helped her greatly through her final months.

Sally trekked across part of Iceland for this charity.

The reason Sally has decided to walk for the Alzheimer’s Society, this time, is because her mother and her mother’s twin sister both had this terrible disease before they died.
