FORMER Birmingham Poet Laureate and Rubery wordsmith Spoz – aka Giovanni Esposito – has been named as one of six ‘Bards of Brum’ who will perform at the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony.

Spoz, who also plays guitar and sings in the band VASELINE, will take to the stage at the Alexander Stadium on July 28 to help kick off the Birmingham 2022 games.

He told the Standard: “I was invited to write a short poem to a brief, regarding a celebration of Birmingham, rather than any nonsense about empire.

“I felt that this was something I could get my teeth into, as I’m a staunch supporter of Birmingham – it’s where I’m from and it gave a home to my mum and dad when they came from Italy.

“I love its rich, multiculturalism and for all its faults, I blimmin’ love the place.

“Anyway, I only went and got picked, didn’t I?”

Unfortunately Spoz must remain tight-lipped about most of what he will be doing and the opening ceremony itself but all will be revealed on the big day when the Second City takes centre stage in front of thousands in the stadium and millions more watching around the world.

“I’m doing a bit of poetry with my fellow Bards, which we wrote collectively.

“Needless to say, it’s going to be epic and there are loads of brilliant and talented people involved – not least my fellow Bards of Brum.

“It’s very humbling.”
