A RUBERY couple have toasted 70 years of marriage.

Family and friends of John Coleman, 91, and wife Gladys, 90, held a special platinum wedding celebration for the pair at the Royal Oak pub in Catshill.

They first met at Newhouse Road Youth Club in Harborne and tied the knot at the registry office on September 24, 1949.

They were both Birmingham born and bred and John worked in the medical corps and Gladys worked for the local council.

John and Gladys, who have two children, three grandchildren and a great grandchild, received a congratulatory card from The Queen.

When asked about the secret of a happy marriage the happy couple said: “Don’t get into arguments, and if you do to make up as soon as possible.”
