RESIDENTS will have more time to have their say on the future of a much-needed disability day centre in Bromsgrove.
The Wendron Centre, on Chapel Street, is one of many ‘connect centres’ across the county providing a free, council-led day service for adults with a learning disability, as well as respite facilities, support and advice for families.
Now at risk of closure, following a report to Cabinet in 2017, Worcestershire County Council has been carrying out pre-consultation engagement with adults, carers, staff and other stakeholders to help shape the future of the services.
Now, they will have until June, rather than April, to express their thoughts.
The decision comes after a group of campaigners were out in force on Bromsgrove High Street to protest against the potential closure.
Coun McDonald said: “The campaign to maintain the centre has received tremendous support and obviously had an effect on the decision being put back to June from April.”
The group took to the street with a petition, which has now garnered more than a thousand signatures.
James Knight who has been coordinating the campaign said: “This is not the end of the campaign we cannot become complacent, the campaign will continue until we know the centre is safe.”
A spokesperson from the county council, said: “We are undertaking engagement only at this stage and no decisions on the future of any of our day services have been made.
“Many people have contributed their views and ideas and in order to give sufficient time to pull together and analyse all of the feedback, we are now planning to report back to Cabinet with the results of the pre-consultation engagement in June.”
