Rednal mum to trek 10 miles to raise cash for Northfield's Victoria School library

A MUM whose twin boys attend Northfield’s Victoria School will walk 10 miles between libraries in a bid to help raise £5,000 to revamp the school’s library.

Charlotte Bull, who lives in Rednal, has been inspired by 12-year-old Alex and Dylan who love their school and reading books.

Currently the library at Victoria School is dingy and dated and a place where the pupils do not enjoy being.

The shelves are not fully accessible to all the students and a space for storytelling is also desperately needed.

Alex and Dylan will be joining Charlotte for parts of the route.

Charlotte, who is also vice-chair of the school’s governors and good friends with the English lead who has organised the event, said: “We would be grateful for whatever donations people can give – no matter how small.

“Reading is an important element of education which is why we need an updated library that is fit for purpose.

“Our students are incredibly brave and deserve an environment to foster and grow their love of reading.”

Victoria School is a special needs setting for students with a wide range of cognitive and physical disabilities. Many use wheelchairs for mobility.

Charlotte added: “Please support us to create a bespoke room which will be fully accessible to all students, with tactile walls and specialist lighting and an indoor tree around which a million stories can be told.

“Help us take our students on journeys, through books, where they can leave behind their pain, problems and disabilities and escape to other places and worlds, where they can be anyone and do anything.”

Charlotte’s journey will start at Victoria School and the group will then head to libraries in Weoley Castle, Quinton, the Touchbase Pears Centre in Selly Oak, Stirchley and Northfield before returning to the school.

Rubery writer and former Birmingham Poet Laureate Spoz will also meet everyone back at the school after the walk next Saturday, June 10.

He will be performing some of his creations.
