Rallying call for volunteers to help with recovery work on the Lickey Hills following the devastating fire

VOLUNTEERS are being sought to assist the Lickey Hills Ranger with their work on Rednal Hill following the devastating fire in July which destroyed acres of land at the beauty spot.

The good news is that some of the bilberry is growing back on the fire site but the bracken is growing back faster and could, in time, shade out the bilberry.

The volunteer session will take place between 10.30am and 12.30pm on Saturday, September 17.

Help is needed to pull out the newly growing bracken and to collect glass which keeps coming to the surface and which this could cause a fire in the future.

The Lickey Hills Society, which has issued the rallying call, has organised the session.

Those wanting to be involved should meet the Ranger on Rednal Hill by the burnt area at 10.30am.

A Lickey Hills Society spokesperson said: “If you can lend a hand for an hour or so, that would be very helpful.”

Participants should take along their own bucket to put collected glass in and gloves. Litter pickers will be provided.

People are being encouraged to monitor the regrowth on Rednal Hill but not to do any planting.
