PROPOSED changes to speed limits in Hanbury have been put forward in a bid to make the village’s roads safer and cut the number of crashes.
It follows a public meeting at Hanbury First School in September after the death of a close friend and member of the community.
Among the changes will be a reduction on the B4090 from 40mph to 30mph between the exiting western terminal point to east of the Vernon Arms.
The limit on the B4091 will also be cut from 40mph to 30mph from the junction with the B4090 to north of the junction of Pumphouse Lane.
And School Road will be reduced from to 40mph for its entire length.
The move has been welcomed by Rachel Maclean, the MP for the area, who organised the meeting which was attended by representatives from Worcestershire Highways, West Mercia Police Chief Constable Pippa Mills,
Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion and Coun Tony Miller, the county councillor for the area.
Ms Maclean said: “Following my public meeting last year, I promised residents that I would ensure the relevant authorities take swift and appropriate action and that’s exactly what is happening.
“I know residents in Hanbury are deeply concerned about road safety in the village and so I welcome the proposed changes to the speed limits.
“I will be submitting my own response to the proposed measures in support of calls for a lower speed limit past Hanbury CE First School.”
A Worcestershire County Council spokesperson said whilst changes to local speed limits were implemented by the local highway authority, decisions were taken by using criteria and guidance set out by the Department for Transport after evaluating evidence and the public’s assessment of what was a safe speed to travel.
“We have worked with local councillors and MPs and conducted a thorough review of the current speed limits in Hanbury.
“Given the current concerns, the measures are now proposed for public consultation and we look forward to hearing residents views.”
Ms Maclean urged residents to have their say on proposals before the deadline of March 16.
