Questions asked over the future of Rubery Police Station

COUNCILLORS in Rubery claim they have information that the village’s police station in New Road is set to be closed and sold off.

And Coun Peter McDonald and Coun Esther Gray have expressed concerns about the move and are calling on the West Mercia Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion to rethink his plans.

Coun McDonald said: “To close the police station would be an act of betrayal, deserting the people of Rubery and furthermore giving the green light to criminals.

“The trust between residents and the police can only decline and that would be disastrous.

Coun Gray added: “Community neighbourhood policing is vital for the wellbeing of residents and recently improved, but without a police station that just cannot continue.

“It would most likely degrade.

“It is important that police are visible and the police station is seen as a place of refuge and point of community contact.”

Coun McDonald has emailed Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion, calling on him to end the speculation and assure us the police station in Rubery is to be maintained.

Mr Campion said: “Police buildings across the estate remain under regular review to ensure they continue to meet the needs of local communities.

“No decision has been made to close or sell Rubery Police Station.

“As PCC, I remain committed to community policing and ensuring residents can access the police when they need them.”
