THE CAKE and Coffee Concert and Heritage Open Day at Bromsgrove’s St John’s Church will go ahead at 10.30am this Saturday, September 17, and a time of reflection for The Queen has been incorporated into the day.

At 10.30am, father and son Paul and George Charman will perform classics on the St John’s organ.

The 50-minute concert will be followed by cake and coffee (or tea) and the audience is encouraged to take a look around the building and explore the churchyard.

St John’s Musical Director Steve Cowperthwaite will be on site to demonstrate and explain how the organ works, and let visitors have a go themselves to see what sounds they can create.

The Bellringing Team will open the bell tower from midday until 4pm.

Visitors can climb to the chamber to have a go on the bells and (weather permitting) climb to the tower battlements to enjoy far reaching views over Bromsgrove.

Places will be allocated on a first come, first serve basis, visitors climb the tower’s spiral staircase at their own risk and children must be accompanied by an adult.

From 4pm until 6pm the church will be open for quiet prayers and reflection and for people to remember The Queen in the Chantry Chapel.

Visitors can also leave their messages of condolence and light a candle in the quiet side chapel.

At 6pm a Service of Remembrance will be held in St John’s Church where the congregation will pay their respects to Her Majesty.
