A SPECIAL event inspired by the Royal British Legion will take place at Bromsgrove’s Sanders Park from midday next Sunday, July 15.

The Poppy Picnic in the Park will be held to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War.

It will feature a performance by the Band of the Mercian Regiment, a dog show, a funfair, military vehicles, the emergency services with their vehicles and much more.

Vintage Classic will also be performing songs from around the time of the Second World War.

Patrick Smith, the chairman of the Bromsgrove Royal British Legion, said: “The last Poppy Picnic in the Park was held to mark the RBL’s 90th anniversary.

“It was a great success and we are hoping this will be equally supported by the good people of Bromsgrove and the surrounding areas.”

There are weekly ‘bands in the park’ events at the Jubilee Bandstand which runs every Sunday from 2.30pm to 4.30pm.

The Blackwell Concert Band, which currently has 55 members and plays a wide range of jazz, calypso, blues, pop and rock, will perform from this Sunday, July 8.

Then, the week after the Poppy Picnic in the Park, there will be the Stour Concert Band on July 22 and the Arrow Valley Brass Band will finish off the packed month on July 29.

Val Wilson, Events Officer for Bromsgrove District Council, said: “We’re really looking forward to July’s events.

“The choirs event last month drew in over 400 cars of visitors so we’re delighted to see so many people coming to Bromsgrove to enjoy themselves.

“Everyone is welcome and guests are invited to bring along chairs, tables and picnics.”
