BROMSGROVE police officer Michael Brown raised nearly £3,000 for the Primrose Hospice which supports the family of his colleague, former Assistant Chief Constable Chris Johnson.

When Chris was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) in 2018, many West Midlands Police officers started running marathons and half marathons to raise funds for the hospice and the MND Association.

The wives of Michael and Chris are both West Midlands Police officers and are good friends.

Michael’s wife ran the London Marathon for the hospice, where his son volunteers every Saturday afternoon.

Michael, who also works for West Midlands Police, decided to take on a bike ride from John O’Groats to Lands End in seven days and set off on May 23, aiming to average around 125 miles a day.

During his ride, cycling ten hours each day, Michael faced all of the elements including horrible weather in Scotland and scorching sun further along his journey.

He said: “By day five the impact was starting to hit and by day six I decided to complete it in eight days. I had plenty of motivation from businesses who gave discounts when they knew what I was doing, and strangers asked for the donation page and made generous contributions.”

Plenty of people supported Michael’s journey, with his family and Primrose sending him videos and messages of encouragement.

Michael’s fund-raising total smashed the £2,000 target that he had originally set himself. It now stands at £2,880.

He added: “I couldn’t be more thrilled to have raised that amount of money for them.

“I almost can’t believe I’ve done this at 47 years of age and the most gratifying part was walking away uninjured.

“I had a few aches and pains but no underlying injury.”
