FIGURES released by West Mercia Police show police officer numbers are set to reach their highest level in more than ten years.

More than 400 officers have joined West Mercia as part of recruitment drives by Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion and the Government.

West Mercia Police has launched another recruitment drive to not only fill vacancies but add an additional 125 officers. This will bring the total number of officers to 2,456 – the highest it has been since 2009 and close to the highest number of officers on record.

Police and Crime Commissioner, John Campion said: “Communities across West Mercia have told me time and time again that they want more visible police officers patrolling their streets.

“I have listened to feedback and delivered on my commitment to increase officer numbers to their highest level in more than a decade. This is a substantial increase, which will make a significant impact across West Mercia – helping people to feel safe and be safe.

Assistant Chief Constable Richard Cooper, said: “Starting a career in the police can be one of the best things you’ll ever do as you’ll make a real difference in your community, by helping to reduce and investigate crimes and making people safer.

“We are looking for talented people with a real aptitude for dealing with people, remaining calm and patient even in stressful or volatile situations, who are able to think on their feet and willing to develop new skills.”
