A VARIETY of activities will be on offer when a Summer Open Day is held at Bromsgrove’s historic St John’s Church from 11am to 3pm  this Saturday, July 20.

The event is being hosted by The Friends of St John’s in conjunction with Avoncroft Museum, The Bromsgrove Society and Bromsgrove’s Norton Collection Museums and the organisers are hoping visitors will ‘be in-spired’ by this important part of the town’s heritage.

The Grade I listed church’s tower will be open from 11.30am until 2.30pm, allowing visitors to climb the 100 steps to see the breathtaking views across the town.

People, with the help of the church’s team, will also be given the chance to have a go at ringing the bells.

Those climbing the tower will be asked to make a donation towards the Spire Appeal. There’s no need to book to climb, but numbers will be limited and climbers will be allowed up on a first come first to climb basis.

Inside the church visitors can try their hand at the organ from 11am until 12.30pm, learn about the church’s history from author Simon

Henderson, help the vicar to find his keys and have a go at some inSPIREing crafts.

There will also be a treasure hunt for all ages which will see participants follow the clues to find the heritage treasures at Bromsgrove’s oldest building.

Teams from Avoncroft Museum, The Bromsgrove Society and the Norton Collection Museum will be on hand to talk about their venues and what they do.

And the team from Avoncroft will have a model timber frame building with them which they will need help building.

The open day will support the Spire Appeal – visit stjohnsfriends.co.uk or find the Friends of St John’s on Facebook for more on the fundraising campaign.
