Plans unveiled for new Lidl supermarket in Northfield, bringing 40 jobs

PLANS have been revealed for a new Lidl foodstore in Northfield Shopping Centre, bringing 40 new jobs.

The discount giant plans to put the store in the site formerly occupied by Sainsbury’s and, more recently, Wilko.

Lidl is consulting residents in the area on the proposals and the plans show the supermarket at the end of the Shopping Centre, in between the Bristol Road and Victoria Common.

On a special web page designated to the consultation and offering people the chance to have their say, Lidl states: “The site, which originally housed a Sainsbury’s supermarket, forms part of Northfield Shopping Centre.

“The existing building on the site comprises part of the indoor shopping parade on the ground floor, with a rooftop car park above. The site is highly accessible by foot, bicycle, bus and car.”

The foostore will be 2,172sq metres and will include 97 standard parking bays, six disabled bays, nine parent and child spaces and two with rapid EV (electric vehicle chargers).

An improved access point, off Bristol Road South (A38), is proposed in the northern corner of the site, as well as a ‘HGV only’ access off Bristol Road South, in the south-west corner of the site.

And the surrounding area will be landscaped to enhance the area.

Lidl GB’s Regional Head of Property, Rachel Hargreaves, said: “We are excited to unveil plans for a new Lidl supermarket, which represent a multi-million-pound investment and would deliver a convenient, modern discount food store to Northfield.

“We look forward to discussing our plans with the community ahead of submitting our application as we’re keen to gain as much feedback as possible to ensure our proposal meets the needs of those living in the area.”

Currently the nearest Lidl supermarkets for Northfield residents are Kings Heath, Halesowen and Bromsgrove.

An in-person consultation session where people can view the plans and discuss the plans will take place from 2pm to 6pm on Thursday, October 19, at Unit 14 (next to Iceland) in Northfield Shopping Centre.
