SUPERMARKET giant Lidl has submitted its plans for a new store in Northfield to Birmingham City Council.

According to the company, the results of its wide-ranging public consultation showed 88 per cent of respondents were in favour of the proposals and welcomed them.

Many, Lidl added, recognised the important investment for Northfield Shopping Centre, improved choice that a new discount supermarket would bring and the 40 new jobs.

Residents also commented on the improved convenience the new store would bring, with one resident adding: “This is the best news for our family.”

And, in direct response to feedback from residents, the proposals also include enhanced pedestrian access to Victoria Common Park.

Lidl GB’s regional head of property, Rachel Hargreaves, said: “We would like to thank everyone who joined us for our public consultation.

“We know there is great support for a new Lidl store in this area as many recognise the benefits it would bring, from investment to new jobs and increased convenience.

“After listening to feedback, we’re also committed to improving access to the beloved Victoria Common Park to benefit the wider community and look forward to receiving a decision from Birmingham City Council in due course.”

The new Lidl would have the discounter’s trademark in-store bakery, a customer toilet with baby-changing facilities, parking with parent and child spaces, accessible bays and rapid electric vehicle (EV) charging points.

Som of the shopping centre – past the lifts – would be bulldozed to accommodate the modern new building.

Currently the nearest Lidl supermarkets for Northfield residents are Kings Heath, Halesowen and Bromsgrove.
