THE WEST Mercia Police and Crime Commissioner has praised the bravery and professionalism of the armed officers who shot a man during a stand-off in Bromsgrove.
We reported last week how the officers had been cleared of any wrongdoing following the incident involving Malvern man Edward Mark Williams.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) stated the officers acted in a calm and professional manner and the investigation highlighted the ‘good practice’ use of body-worn video which captured the 55-year-old failing to comply and pointing his weapon at the police.
John Campion said: “Those involved showed outstanding bravery, when faced with a frightening and fast paced situation.
“Our communities expect high standards of service and should be reassured that the investments made in body worn video, meant that the incident was clearly captured.
“This proved these highly skilled officers acted calmly and professionally in order to protect the public, and provided irrefutable evidence which has brought the offender to justice.”
Williams pleaded guilty to escaping lawful custody, two counts of possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence and having an imitation firearm with intent to resist arrest.
He will be sentenced on December 2 at Worcester Crown Court after a pre-sentence report.
