NEW benches designed to encourage conversation between members of the public have been installed in three parks across Bromsgrove.
The Chatty Benches have been put in by Catshill and North Marlbrook Parish Council in a bid to reduce loneliness and isolation by offering a simple, inviting space for people to sit down and strike up a conversation.
The concept behind Chatty Benches is straightforward yet powerful: existing or newly installed benches are marked with signs indicating that those seated are open to chatting with others.
This creates opportunities for spontaneous conversations, helping to break down barriers and foster a sense of belonging.
“We know even a brief moment of connection can make a significant difference in reducing feelings of loneliness,” said Brett Laniosh, vice-chairman of Catshill and Marlbrook Parish Council.
“We hope these benches encourage people to say hello, engage in a quick chat, or share a kind word—whether it’s commenting on the weather or simply sharing a smile.”
“For someone who’s feeling isolated, this small act of kindness can have a lasting, positive impact. We’re excited to see how they will help bring our community closer together.”
You’ll find the benches located in Braces Lane Playground, Marlbrook Gardens, and Lingfield Walk. These high-traffic areas were specifically chosen to increase the likelihood of social interaction while ensuring a safe environment for all.
The benches follow an idea adopted by various countries including the United States, Canada, Australia, Switzerland and Ukraine. Other local authorities in Worcestershire have implemented similar benches, including Malvern Town Council.
The council will consider adding Chatty Benches to other locations if the idea proves successful. They will welcome suggestions for future locations.
