A SPECIAL open day and summer party will be held by Aston Fields Sports and Social Club to showcase its new-look garden, following a makeover, writes Natalia Lejzak.

The revamp of the garden was completed last month and it now features a seated area, planted tubs and secure access to the Aston Fields recreation ground.

The event between 3pm and 8pm next Saturday, July 20 will feature live music and be open to both members and visitors who will and be able to see first-hand all the club has to offer.

The club was originally founded as a working men’s club in 1894 and was based in one room of a cottage on the corner of South Road and Stoke Road.

It later moved to the Pear Tree Villa and then to its current site in Stoke Road where there is a snooker room, upstairs function room, main bar and a dining area.

The club was once popular with workers at the old Garringtons site which, in its day, was the biggest forge in Europe.

A selection of photographs relating to its history can be viewed in the clubhouse.

Steward Dave Winney said it was a very friendly and sociable club where a warm welcome awaited everyone.

“We offer a comfortable and informal place where people can enjoy a drink or participate in our regular events, which include quiz nights, bingo and live music.”
