LIBERAL Democrats in the district celebrated the North Shropshire by-election victory over the Conservatives and said it paved the way for the party to take more seats across the country – including Bromsgrove – at the next general election.
North Shropshire was a safe Tory seat but that majority – of almost 23,000 votes – was overturned.
Party members said – with that and the other Liberal Democrat by-election victory over the Conservatives in Chesham and Amersham in the summer – momentum was building.
Dr David Nicholl, Bromsgrove Liberal Democrat Chair, believes the party’s win in the North Shropshire by-election could pave the way for a win in the local area at the next general election.
He said: “We saw this week in North Shropshire that people are fed up with being ignored and taken for granted by the Conservatives.
“In Bromsgrove, just like in North Shropshire, voters can back the Liberal Democrats to send Boris Johnson’s Conservatives a clear message.
“If we can win in North Shropshire, then we can win here.
“The Liberal Democrats believe people deserve a fair deal where everyone plays by the same rules – including those in Downing Street.
“We will deliver that fair deal with good schools, safe streets, and high-quality healthcare.”
Locally the Lib Dems gained three Bromsgrove District Council seats in 2019 and became the largest opposition party on Worcestershire County Council this year.
Liberal Democrat County Councillor for Bromsgrove Central, Joshua Robinson added: “We have proven over the past two years that we are the challengers to the Conservatives in Bromsgrove.
“Lib Dem councillors have achieved a lot for Bromsgrove since being elected and we have big plans for the future.”
