North Bromsgrove High triumphs over South at Rotary's annual debating contest

PUPILS from North Bromsgrove High have the bragging rights over their South school counterparts after finishing triumphantly in an annual debating competition, writes Caprice Harrison.

The Michael Holt debate, organised by the Rotary Club of North Worcetershire, sees teams from each school’s sixth-form take to the floor and do battle.

The North Bromsgrove High School team was selected to propose the motion: “This House believes social media is harmful in general to society,” with South opposing.

Judging the teams on both on content and presentation were senior members of the North Worcestershire and Bromsgrove Rotary Clubs.

Dave Foster, President of North Worcestershire Rotary Club said: “At a time when public discourse is becoming increasingly confrontational and polarised and interpersonal communication skills are declining, it was very heartening to see young people debating in this way.

“Michael Holt would have approved.”

The debate, jointly sponsored by the two Rotary Clubs, is held in memory of local architect and Rotarian Michael Holt.

Mr Holt was also member of the prestigious Birmingham and Edgbaston Debating Society.
