SEVERN Trent engineers helped students at Chadsgrove School to plant a 600-tree tiny forest to celebrate the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

The planting last Thursday was one of 72 tennis court sized tiny forests being planted across the region – one to symbolise each of the nations and territories participating in the games.

Chadsgrove’s is the second tiny forest to be planted in Bromsgrove, with 58 already planted across the Midlands.

Tiny Forests can attract over 500 animal and plant species within three years of them being introduced.

The sites will boost access to urban green space and support education on the environment as well as help create a lasting legacy for Birmingham 2022.

Severn Trent is planting the trees as part of its role as Birmingham 2022’s Official Nature and Carbon Neutral Supporter and the project is backed by environmental charity Earthwatch Europe.

After contacting Chadsgrove about a pipe-laying scheme near to the school in July 2021, Severn Trent’s Trunk Main Team mentioned the tiny forest project to staff, who were eager to get involved.

Ten of the team who initially told Chadsgrove about the project returned to help with the forest planting.

Kevin Hatch, Severn Trent’s Trunk Main Manager, said: “The school has been so excited to get involved with the Tiny Forest project and it’s been great to see the children enjoy the day and plant the trees.

“We’ve also had some help from the community with police officers and councillors all getting involved.

“It will be so special for the children to see these trees grow in the future.”

Chadsgrove School headteacher Deb Rattley added: “Here at Chadsgrove our aim is to prepare all of our pupils for life beyond school – the Tiny Forest project will help our children embed some of the skills needed for adulthood, such as problem solving, creativity, leadership and teamwork.

“The Tiny Forest is a whole school project which all of our learners will be able to enjoy for years to come.”
