YOUNG people aged between 16 and 17 will be able to get a new railcard from tomorrow which will give them half price fares and season tickets.

The 16-17 Saver, which costs £30-per-year and will be available for use from September 2, is the highest ever discounted card for young adults and rail bosses anticipate it will give 1.2million a helping hand.

Users can have their card sent to their phone or a printed version.

The Young Person’s Railcard for 16 to 25-year-olds, which is also £30-per-year, offers only a third off fares and is mainly for leisure activities

The 16-17 Saver is aimed at helping teenagers with all rail travel – from college and education to family days out and enabling them to explore Britain via the railways.

Robert Nisbet, Nations and Regions at Rail Delivery Group director, said: “Switching to a new college is a time of great change and brings new independence for young people.

“Working together, the rail industry is committed to enabling more people to benefit from train travel.”

Rail Minister Chris Heaton-Harris, said: “The brand new Saver means a generation of rail passengers can now benefit from cheaper fares, keeping money in their pocket and helping them get to school, college and work.

“We want to create a railway system that’s fit for the 21st century and provides a reliable, punctual journey.

“Through the Saver, the 26-30 Railcard and a record £48billion investment in the railways, we are focused on providing passengers with the frequent, reliable and affordable journeys they deserve.”
