MP plants memorial stake in Westminster's Garden of Remembrance on behalf of the people of Bromsgrove

Bromsgrove MP Sajid Javid has planted a memorial stake at The Constituency Garden of Remembrance, in Parliament, in memory of all those who served to defend the freedom we enjoy today.

The Constituency Garden of Remembrance was launched in 2021 by The Speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, in partnership with the Royal British Legion.

Members of Parliament each plant a memorial wooden stake in the garden on behalf of their constituents.

Due to the overwhelming response from MPs in 2021, The Speaker announced that The Constituency Garden of Remembrance, based in New Palace Yard, would be returning for a second year.

The Speaker also informed MPs they would be able to dedicate their stake to an individual and organisation within their community who have defended our freedoms, whilst also commemorating those who have fallen.

Mr Javid dedicated his stake to the Bromsgrove Royal British Legion and in particular to Sgt Mjr Patrick Smith who served in the armed forces for 22 years before volunteering at the Bromsgrove Royal British Legion for 15 years.

Sgt Mjr Smith announced his retirement from the Royal British Legion earlier this year.

Mr Javid said: “Every year, we come together to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedoms, and for the past two years I have been honoured to plant a memorial stake on behalf of Bromsgrove District in The Constituency Garden of Remembrance.

“This year, I was pleased to also dedicate the tribute to the Bromsgrove Royal British Legion, and Sergeant Major Patrick Smith.

“I would like to thank the Bromsgrove Royal British Legion, its members, and Sgt Mjr Smith for their service.”
