Mental health nurse calls on Bromsgrove and Droitwich residents to join mass doorstep Christmas carols singalong

A MENTAL health nurse is urging as many people as possible to end a difficult year on a high by taking part in a mass doorstep Christmas carol singalong.

The Standard was contacted by Bella Patterson about the idea which originated in Shropshire and has been spreading nationwide over the past few weeks.

Similar to the Clap for Our Carers which paid tribute to the NHS every Thursday evening, participants will sing carols on their doorsteps at 6pm on Wednesday, December 16, ensuring social distancing whilst coming together.

The event will also raise funds for mental health charity Mind with a suggested donation of £2 per person singing.

Bella, who has made her Bromsgrove garden more Christmassy with a gingerbread house and other items, is hoping to inspire people to tune up for the event.

She said: “I have been looking after people with mental disorders and Covid.

“I was often pulling up from work on a Thursday during the NHS clap and all my neighbours would wave and chant. It was emotional every week.

“We decorate our house for Easter, Halloween and Christmas for the community and to spread some joy.

“I wanted to go all out and give something back to our road and further afield after a tough year.

“We are very much looking forwards to the Christmas Carol singing evening and would love the whole of Bromsgrove and Droitwich to join in.”

Beth Heath, director of fun at Shropshire Festivals which came up with the idea with My Shrewsbury magazine, said the event was inspired by the Clap for Our Carers.

“After a tough year. we thought it would be nice to bring people together whilst still socially distancing to spread some festive cheer.”

BBC Radio stations, including Hereford and Worcester and WM, will be part of the event and be playing the carols in order.

Those wanting to take part can visit www.doorstepcarols.co.uk for more information, to download carols sheets and sheet music and to donate to Mind.
