MEADOW Park Cobras under-13 girls’ claimed the George Silverman Cup and local bragging rights after securing an emphatic 4-0 win against Catshill Girls in the final.
Despite a scoreless first half, Meadow Park struck four times in the final quarter of an hour to claim the trophy with the Cobras’ number 19 scoring a hat-trick.
Players on both teams attend the same local schools as each other to further heighten the stakes and Meadow Park started on the front foot as they dominated possession against a stubborn Catshill side.
And Catshill’s goalkeeper made a string of fine saves to keep the scores level before a penalty was awarded at the other end after a trip in the box.
However, Meadow Park’s keeper made a tremendous save from the resulting spot kick to send the teams into the break all square.
And the Cobras were left frustrated in the second period as Catshill’s goalkeeper continued to keep them at bay whilst remaining a threat to the Meadow Park defence on the counter attack.
However, Meadow Park eventually broke the deadlock with around 10 minutes to go when Cobras’ number seven floated a corner over the first Catshill defender and the Cobras’ number nine was on hand to finish with a stunning outside of the boot volley.
And Cobras’ number 19 then capitalised on a defensive mix up at the back to volley home and double Meadow Park’s lead.
Cobras’ number 19 added her side’s third goal when she broke the offside before sliding home and she completed her treble shortly after with an excellent finish into the bottom corner from the edge of the penalty area.
The final whistle was blown and there were absolute scenes of celebrations on the pitch as Meadow Park Cobras were crowned cup winners. There were handshakes and fist pumps all round and mutual respect between the two sets of players and coaches. Both knew they had been involved in a tough battle and fantastic football match. A great advertisement for girls football in Bromsgrove.
