A MAN had to be taken to hospital after being shot by an armed police officer in Frankley.

West Midlands Police cordoned off Hereford Close following the incident last night (Wednesday).

At about 9pm, a firearm was discharged by an armed officer which resulted in a man being taken to hospital with a gunshot wound.

The man survived the shot and is currently in a critical but stable condition.

One man – aged 21 – was arrested for suspected firearm offences. Two other men, aged 17 and 20, and a 53-year-old woman were arrested on suspicion of drugs offences.

Supt Andy Parsons, from Birmingham Police, said: “A number of properties are being searched in connection with the ongoing police investigation and the subsequent arrests.

“There will continue to be a police presence in the local area to provide reassurance to our communities.”

The incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission and WMP say the officer involved was wearing his body-worn video camera at the time of the incident.
