IN SUPPORT of St John’s Spire Appeal the town’s MP has hosted a lunch to raise more funds for the campaign.

The former Chancellor, Home Secretary and Health Secretary joined the town’s business community and key supporters of St John’s Spire Appeal in the church on Friday, May 10.

The Friends of St John’s organised the event which was sponsored by Chartered Accountants Ormerod Rutter and the church’s neighbouring bar The Dry Spy who provided the food.

Steve Cowperthwaite and Rob Porter played piano and clarinet as background music for the arrival drinks.

Guests had an opportunity to network, meet Sir Sajid and enjoy an excellent lunch before hearing about the Spire Appeal.

Sir Sajid Javid spoke to the attendees about his time in Parliament over the past 14 years, before answering questions.

Four students from St John’s Middle School attended the event. They assisted the Town Crier in welcoming guests to the landmark church building.

The students chatted to everyone about their links with the church and to find out their reasons for supporting the Spire Appeal. They each asked Sir Sajid a question after his talk.

In total, the event raised £2,000, with an additional £5,000 pledged from attendees. The Spire Appeal’s target is £360,000 which is required to repar the top 2.5 metres of Bromsgrove’s landmark church spire which is cracking due to the rusting of a metal stabilising rod.

To date £305,000 has been raised, thanks to local donations and an award of just short of £250,000 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

The next event for the Spire Appeal will be an Open Day at St John’s Church on Saturday, May 25 which will follow the 10.30am Cake and Coffee Concert.
