Lottery win for Bromsgrove Hockey Club nets new astro pitch

MEMBERS of Bromsgrove Cricket, Hockey and Tennis Club were celebrating this week after being awarded a £299,219 National Lottery grant which means it can now build its community astroturf.

The cash, which they received as part of Sport England’s Improvement Fund, brings the four-year Astro-4-All fund-raising campaign to its best possible conclusion.

And it now means the club will be able to build its new artificial grass pitch with floodlighting at the club on St Godwald’s Road, Aston Fields. The pitch will be ready for the start of the 2015/16 season and will help the club get more Bromsgrove young people into sport.

Libby Joss, chair of Bromsgrove Hockey Club, said: “It will allow hockey and other sports to sustain, develop and grow within an already established sports environment.

“It will provide a much needed facility accessible to schools, clubs and colleges in the daytime and evening who currently struggle to find suitable playing surfaces for their sports.”

Lorraine Aspland, who led the project said raising the cash for the project had been a long and stressful process.

“We have now managed to secure just over £600,000 through various funding streams so the project can go ahead.

“We are very thankful to all our funding partners; Sport England, England Hockey, National Hockey Foundation, Bromsgrove District Council and Friends and Members of the club for supporting the project and finally after many years making this a reality.”

The club is one of 21 projects across England to share in over £7.1million of National Lottery investment from the third round of funding.

Sport England’s property director, Charles Johnston, said: “We know people have a better experience of sport when they have good facilities in which to play.

“This is why we’re investing in Bromsgrove Cricket, Hockey and Tennis Club to improve their facilities so they are more appealing young people, and help us to get them developing a lifelong sporting habit.”

Bromsgrove Hockey Club has two extra teams in the league this year (Ladies and Mens 4th XIs) and are looking for players of all ages/abilities to help grow/support the club. Anyone interested should visit http://www.bromsgrovehockey.org.uk/ to find out more.

The club also wants to recruit Level 2 Coaches (or working towards L2) for ladies’, men’s and junior coaching roles.
