THE QUEEN and the Duke of Edinburgh visited Bromsgrove while on a tour of Worcestershire back in March 2001.

And The Standard was there to capture to momentous occasion with a four-page special after the visit.

Here we look back at how we covered the memorable day for many.

The Royal couple were welcomed to the town by then Bromsgrove District Council Chairman, Coun Anne Doyle and then MP Julie Kirkbride.

During her visit, The Queen, accompanied by her Lady in Waiting and the Lord Lieutenant of Hereford and Worcester Sir Thomas Dunne, visited North Bromsgrove High School to officially open the new state-of-the-art Millennium Building.

Hundreds of residents queued along the roads on the approach to the school, waving Union Flags to offer the monarch a warm Bromsgrove welcome in the sunshine.

At the school she met representatives and pupils during a 40-minute visit which then headteacher Kevin Peck described as ‘a day he, his staff and the students would never forget’.

The Queen heard about North’s links to Gambia and met members of the Gambia Committee and a special assembly was held with music played for Her Majesty.

The Duke of Edinburgh, meanwhile, headed to Avoncroft Museum where he took a particular interest in the national collection of telephone kiosks, including the Police Box, similar to The Tardis in Dr Who.

Prince Philip also had tea with 100 ex-Grenadier Guards at the museum’s New Guesten Hall.
