LED installation to save on energy bills

Bromsgrove Editorial 29th Aug, 2023   0

THOUSANDS of old-style streetlights across the county have been replaced with energy efficient LED lamps.

An ambitious project to upgrade 21,000 to new LED (light-emitting diode) streetlights, which began in April 2022, has now been completed – more than a year earlier than planned.

The switch was accelerated due to high energy costs.

Around £6million has been invested by Worcestershire County Council into revamping lighting mostly in residential roads.

The LEDs not only save energy compared to older bulbs but help reduce the county’s carbon footprint and the need for maintenance.

Councillor Mike Rouse, county cabinet member for transport, said: “The streetlight upgrade programme is a significant project and I’m delighted it has been completed ahead of schedule.”

The upgraded lights save around 40 to 60 per cent of energy compared to the older bulbs.

They are more efficient as they are expected to last up to 20 years, saving taxpayers’ money.

Worcestershire County Council’s energy usage has also reduced by 21 per cent, compared to last year. In areas where it appears older streetlights have yet to be replaced or may have been missed, crews will return to them.
