THE NEXT talk to be organised by the Bromsgrove Society takes place a week on Tuesday, March 19, at the town’s Methodist Centre, Stratford Road.
‘Living the Poor Life – In and Out of the Bromsgrove Workhouse’ will be given by Sarah Bradley at 7.45pm.
She will be speaking about the experiences of the people who were forced to go to the Bromsgrove Workhouse.
The first mention of a workhouse in England was in the 1600s and they were not officially outlawed until 1930.
Life in workhouses was harsh to deter the able-bodied poor and ensure only the truly destitute would apply.
