YEAR 1 pupils at Meadows First School in Bromsgrove have been finding out about life on the breadline – and below.
A member of staff from Newstarts Food Bank in Bromsgrove came to speak to the youngsters about what a food bank does and how it relies on donations to help people in need.
On hearing about how many families are struggling pupils decided something had to be done to help food bank clients put food on the table.
“They felt very strongly that they needed to do something, so they came up with ideas to get children across the school to bring in food items,” said assistant head Matt Tunnicliffe.
“They decided a non school uniform day would be a great idea, so they wrote letters to all the children in the school to persuade them to bring in a food item in return for non school uniform.”
The result of their initiative was a bumper donation to the food bank – with a day wearing casual clothes as their reward.
