Keen crafters needed to create First World War display next week

KEEN crafters from Worcestershire are being called on to help create a display commemorating the centenary of the ending of the First World War.

People are needed to knit, crochet or sew 10,000 poppies, each one representing a Worcestershire serviceman or woman who lost their life during the war.

The end result will be a weeping wall of knitted poppies in the entrance of The Hive in Worcester spilling over the staircase to the floor.

Crafters can make their poppies at home and take them to The Hive or to the library in Redditch or they can join one of the Poppy Craft Circles at The Hive and learn how to make them.

The circles are being held on Tuesday, August 21 from 5.30pm to 8.30pm or Saturday, September 15 from 10.30am to 1pm both at The Hive Café.

Alternatively Crafty Corner meets at The Hive on the first and third Tuesday of the month and have patterns available.

Janine Downes, manager of The Hive, said: “We wanted to do something special which would create something striking and make people stop and think.

“However, 10,000 knitted poppies is no small feat, so we need everyone to dust off their wool and needles, make now the time you learn to knit and to contribute to create something special for all those who lost their lives fighting for our country.”
