THE BROMSGROVE and Redditch branch of the RAF Association (RAFA) will be celebrating the Royal Air Force’s recent centenary with a special event.

The group will be getting together on May 11 when the baton representing the Royal Flying Corps will be arriving in Bromsgrove from the Royal and Warwick Leamington Spa Branch.

It will be met by officers and members of the Bromsgrove and Redditch branch before journeying on its way to the Worcester and District branch on May 19 where there will be a RAFA band concert at the Swan Theatre.

Residents are invited to Bromsgrove Sporting’s Rousler Bar, Birmingham Road, for the baton’s arrival. The handover ceremony will start around 1pm and the overall reception is expected to end by 2.30pm.

Dignitaries, guests and RAFA members will be present and light refreshments will be served.

Graham Kiteley, the branch secretary, said: “We would like to welcome as many guests as possible to join us at the reception and the handover ceremony for the baton, thus commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Royal Air Force.

“People will also be able to find out more about the great work the Royal Air Forces Association does in supporting all members of the RAF family.”

This will be one of many events across the Midlands and the country held to commemorate the RAF’s centenary which was officially on April 1.

During the First World War, the role of airpower in warfare was becoming more and more crucial and it was proposed the aviation branches of the Royal Navy and British Army should come together into a single unit.

On April 1, 1918, the world’s first independent air force, the Royal Air Force, came into being, having been formed by the amalgamation of the Royal Naval Air Service and the Royal Flying Corps.

The first commander of the new organisation was Mjr Gen Hugh Trenchard.
