HUNDREDS of people turned out for the annual Rubery Festival on Sunday.

The annual extravaganza started with a parade, featuring the cadets, community groups and the singing princesses, journeying to St Chad’s Park.

The event was officially opened by Bromsgrove District Council chair, Coun Sam Ammar, who welcomed everyone and said it was great to have a fun festival for all the family at the end of the school summer holidays.

There, in the arena, was an entertainment stage offering five hours of live music and dance.

Among the acts performing were Jasmine Nicholson, Excels Dance Academy, the Singing Princesses, Lady and the Sax, Ellie Hooper Zumba, Zak Dienn, Gemma Ronan Zumba, Shaza TJ, Michelle Black and the Mini Movers Dance School.

As well as the live entertainment, there were also food stalls, fresh cakes, ice cream, a charity tabletop sale, bouncy castle, face painting, pony rides, quad bikes and vintage cars.

On community stalls were representatives from several organisations, including Rubery WI, the village’s Community Builder and the Rubery Wombles.

Rubery WI, which recently celebrated its 90th anniversary, showcased some very impressive yarn bombing and also ran a Win a Breakfast competition and a tombola.

President Emily Bowen said: “It was our first outing to the festival and was great to be part of the event.”

The Rubery Community Builder, which is part of NewStarts and also attended, has set up a men’s social group and French knitting sessions. It also has a community garden near Rubery Library and can signpost people to help and support they need.

Angela Brookes, from the group, said: “We work to bring some of that community spirit back to Rubery and ask people what they would like to see.”

Rubery Festival organiser Tony Maslen said: “We had a steady flow of visitors throughout the day and some very good feedback about this year’s event.”
