THE CROWDS came out in their droves on Saturday, braving the rain for the big Bromsgrove Carnival parade.
The clouds held off until the parade reached Sanders Park but, despite the deluge and high winds which battered the arena, people remained in good spirits.
Bromsgrove-born Harry Potter star Mark Williams officially opened the event and presented the parade awards.
The best float in the aptly film-themed line-up went to Millfields First School for its ‘Lion King’ lorry and the best walking group accolade went to Girlguiding Bromsgrove.
Mr Williams spoke about his pride of being from Bromsgrove and his memories of life in the town.
“Last time I was here in Sanders Park, I was catching sticklebacks.”
He also praised the parade participants’ enthusiasm and hard work, adding: “They never stopped waving and it was great to see everything had been hand-made.”
Adam Lote from the Bromsgrove Carnival Committee said: “Although it was very wet, there was still lots of people out.
“People were still cheering despite the thunder, lightning and rain – it was really nice to see. It’s been quite overwhelming for us.”
In the arena were a variety of charity and community stalls, a funfair, inflatables, live music and performances at the Jubilee Bandstand and a food village from Just Eats.
All proceeds from the event will go to local charities, including the Primrose Hospice, Rose and Daisy Foundation and the Friends of St Johns.
The outdoor cinema scheduled for last Friday, fell victim to the weather but went ahead on Sunday night instead when Encanto and Grease were both screened.
