VISITORS braved the drizzle and flocked to the Rubery Festival this afternoon.

It began with a parade at 12pm before the fun moved onto the arena in St Chad’s Park.

There, there were a host of stalls from a variety of community groups, including St Chad’s Church, a tombola from the Rubery Wombles and the Rednal Hill Junior School Parents, Teachers and Friends Association which was raising funds for activities and a new minibus.

On the main stage, a host of singers and dancers performed in the spotlight.

And there were funfair attractions, food and drink, train rides and film and TV characters, including The Little Mermain, Elsa and Anna from Frozen, Mary Poppins and Bert.

Organiser Tony Maslen said: “We saw the forecast for light rain and took the decision to keep outside – the show had to go on.

“People still came out to support the event and we had a good attendance.”

Emma Smith and her 11-year-old daughter Izzy had travelled from Hall Green to get to the event.

Emma said: “My cousin and best friend live here so we come down every year.

“Rubery is a really friendly and neighbourly place and there’s always a relaxed atmosphere – it just feels really local and it’s great to see the community come together and be part of it.”
