The ceremony took place at the war monument in Crown Close.

It began with a parade led by standards to the monument where Bromsgrove Town Crier Kevin Ward performed a special VE Day 80 cry.

The service was led by Rev Ray Khan, vicar of St John’s and the Bromsgrove Royal British Legion Chaplain.

Wreaths were laid by the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Worcestershire, Bromsgrove MP Bradley Thomas, the Bromsgrove District Council chairman and leader, along with Armed Services representatives – the Navy, Army and Royal Air Force, among others.

There was also the Kohima Epitath, Exhortation, Last Post and Reveille, along with a two-minute silence.

Rev Khan said: “It was a really good turn-out – especially for an event in the middle of the week when a lot of people are at work.

“We remember those who sacrificed so much and, as well as the 300 gathered here today, others from across Bromsgrove District who could not make it will be remembering in their own way.”

Mr Thomas added: “It was poignant – freedom is hard fought for but easily lost and we must remember that.

“A lot of people made a lot of sacrifices for our freedom and it is important that we do not forget that.

“Days like this show they and what they fought for would never be forgotten.

“Bromsgrove is always good on these occasions – it epitomises the service and recognition of the armed forces.”
