BROMSGROVE Society will celebrate the Housman family and their connections to Bromsgrove at this years 36th annual lecture.

The lecture, hosted by the Bromsgrove Society and presented by local historian Julian Hunt will celebrate the ‘Housman Family Story’ on April 19 at 7.30pm in the Routh Concert Hall at Bromsgrove School.

The event will be held in conjunction with the Housman Society to celebrate their 50th anniversary.

The Rev Robert Housman first came to Bromsgrove in the 1790s to visit his brother in law, John Adams, manager of the worsted mill in Watt Close.

In the 1830s, Adams, living at Perry Hall, helped his nephew, the Rev Thomas Housman to become the first curate of Catshill.

Upon Adams’ death in 1858, the Rev Thomas’ son, Edward Housman moved into Perry Hall and became a leading figure in Bromsgrove, holding popular speeches at Court Leet dinners.

Edwards oldest son, poet Alfred Edward Housman grew up at Perry Hall alongside his brothers and sisters including Laurence and Clemence, who played a major role in campaigning for women’s suffrage.

Julian Hunt, was born in Romsley and has spent his career in research, having been a member of the Bromsgrove Society Executive Committee for many years.

He joined the staff at Birmingham Reference Library in 1968 and later worked as a local studies librarian in Oldham and Aylesbury.

Tickets for the lecture are £7.50 and include a drink afterwards.

The lecture can be live streamed online at www.bromsgrove-school.co.uk/boxoffice for £5.

Tickets can also be purchased with cash from Foto Factory, 123 High Street, Bromsgrove.
