Housing boss pledges to act after tenants’ complaints

Bromsgrove Editorial 21st Nov, 2022   0

BROMSGROVE District Housing Trust (BDHT) has vowed to rectify all issues being experienced by tenants living in some of its properties in Charford.

The trust was contacted by a number of people living in a block on Lyttleton Avenue.

Mum Charlotte Rae claimed the issues had been going on at her property for several years, adding some of those living there longer had similar problems.

Among the issues, she said, were windows not being properly sealed, meaning moisture got into her home and allowed the heat to escape, the front door not being a secure fire door, mould and rats outside and in her home. She said at one point the rats were on her sofa.

She added it had got so bad she and her daughters had to move out and, although she had been offered alternative accommodation, she did not yet know when it would be available.

BDHT’s chief executive Graeme Anderson said everyone living in the block had been offered a personal visit so individual circumstances could be addressed.

“We recognise there are problems, some of which are easier to solve in the short term than others,” he added.

“We are in the process of repairing what we can with immediate effect and we are working on bringing the window replacement programme forward to the next few months.

“Of those who allowed us to visit there was no evidence of damp and mould in their homes and this was confirmed by the customers.

“Most of the people we have spoken to over the past few days are really happy living where they do. They are proud of their homes and we want to support them living there and therefore we will do all we can to ensure they are safe and comfortable.”

He added: “We are in ongoing contact with Charlotte who has not yet granted us access into her flat so we can investigate and assess the issues she has outlined.”
