YEAR four pupils from Hanbury C of E First School are celebrating winning a competition to design a cover for a book about Greta Thunberg.
The children’s design impressed the judges from Beacons Development Education Centre and the University of Worcester School of Arts who rewarded them with a special story sack.
Included in the prize is a picture book highlighting a climate change issue, a facts book which explains the science and effect of climate change, lots of useful classroom resources plus a copy of the newly released ‘Greta Thunberg (100% unofficial)’.
Beacons DEC is an educational charity focused on improving public awareness and understanding of world cultures, and how global issues affect the everyday lives.
Their brief was to design front and back cover inside flaps and that the design and blurb should reflect and comment on the content suggested by the book title.
The inside flaps had to comment on the devastating effect of climate change, possible responses on how to encourage others to protect the climate. It could also include information on Greta Thunberg and the impact she and the climate change movement have been making.
Sara Nugent, Chair of Beacons DEC told the children: “We really enjoyed reviewing your submission for Greta Thunberg’s new book cover.
“Your creative climate equation really stood out! It’s clear and concise and includes a variety of styles, from thoughtful illustrations to using a photograph of Greta.
“The judges think it looks like a very collaborative piece of work. The message that we need to take action is clear.”
National lockdown meant the award had to be delayed – the children were in year three when their entry was submitted.
Their year three teacher, Charlie Moseley-Downton said she was delighted with their success.
“Our class were learning about the environment in their Topic work, so used what they had learned to come up with its content.
“Everyone had an input and we really enjoyed the design stage as art is a subject we love at Hanbury.
“We look forward to finding out more about our amazing planet by using the contents of our new story sack.
“We’re thrilled that the whole school – and as a result the environment – will benefit from our win!”
