CURRENT council leaders in Redditch, Bromsgrove and Wychavon have issued a rallying call to residents to have their say on the Local Government Reorganisation.
All three authorities, along with Worcester City and Malvern District, back Transforming Worcestershire to create two unitary authorities.
Under this model, one authority would serve the north of the county (Bromsgrove, Redditch and Wyre Forest), while another would cover the south (Malvern Hills, Worcester City and Wychavon).
Key priorities for this proposal include shifting services from crisis response to prevention, empowering communities by keeping decision-making local, and driving long-term financial sustainability.
A final decision from the Government is expected in July 2026.
Elections for a new ‘shadow’ authority – or authorities – would take place in May 2027, ahead of the new arrangements coming into effect on April 1, 2028.
Redditch Borough Council Leader Coun Sharon Harvey said: “Reorganisation is the only way to overhaul an inefficient, outdated and costly two-tier system which exists in Worcestershire.
“The ambition is to deliver a strong future with better outcomes for our residents and we believe the Transforming Worcestershire proposal does this.
Bromsgrove District Council Leader Coun Karen May added: “This is an important time for local government and now is the time to make a difference.
“We need the views from the people whose lives our services touch every day to make sure the right decision is made for our district.”
And, Coun Richard Morris, Wychavon District Council leader, said it was vital as many people as possible had their say, adding Transforming Worcestershire was based on public feedback in the district and built on residents’ priorities.
“If we have to change, Transforming Worcestershire is the only option that will deliver that in a meaningful way.”
