Get twitching for the Big Garden Birdwatch tomorrow

Bromsgrove Editorial 27th Jan, 2017   0

RESIDENTS across Bromsgrove, Rubery, Droitwich and South Birmingham are being reminded to fill up their bird feeders for this weekend’s RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch.

The World’s largest garden wildlife survey, now in its 38th year, takes place from tomorrow (Saturday) to Monday (January 30) when the public are asked to spend just one hour in their gardens or in a local public space counting birds and sending their results to the RSPB.

The top five birds spotted in Worcestershire in the Big Garden Birdwatch 2016 were house sparrow, blue tit, blackbird, woodpigeon and great tit and it will be interesting to see if that stays the same this year.

People are also urged to count other creatures during their hour, including hedgehogs, stag beetles, moles, stoats, badgers and grass snakes.

Visit rspb.org.uk/birdwatch for more information and to take part. Results will be published in March.

The parallel event, Big Schools’ Birdwatch is already under way and runs until the end of the first half of the spring term – February 17.

Go to rspb.org.uk/schoolswatch for more on that.
