Fund-raising appeal to improve Bromsgrove's Chadsgrove Specialist College's garden

BROMSGROVE’S Chadsgrove Educational Trust Specialist College has launched a fund-raising campaign to help transform the garden for its students.

The college is hoping to install a wooden gazebo, which will provide much-needed shelter for students to embrace the sensory aspects the outdoors can provide, wheelchair-friendly planters and ground resurfacing so it is easier to manoeuvre.

Deb Rattley, Principal of Chadsgrove Specialist College, said: “Our project will provide an incredibly valuable resource for all of our students to help promote wellbeing and mindfulness in a sensory-inspired garden.

“It is also a fantastic opportunity for our students to be able to support and engage with members of our local community.”

It follows on from a project in the summer holidays when a team from Severn Trent carried out some improvements to one of the college’s outdoor areas.

A smooth spacious communal area was created to allow students to independently make their way in and out of the college.

Kevin Patch from Severn Trent said whist working on the other project, he and his team recognised an area adjacent to the college which could be improved.

Kevin revisited the college with Coun Shirley Webb who was also instrumental in organising the developments.

Kevin, Shirley and students helped to plant flowers and shrubs kindly donated from Willowbrook Garden Centre.

Kevin said mproving the small area was their way of ‘giving back to the community’.

Chadsgrove Specialist College is aimed for Students aged 19 to 25 with physical disabilities and/or complex medical needs.

The school has previously benefitted in the summer with the improvement of some outdoor things thanks to a team of volunteers from Severn Trent.

To pass on the kindness Severn Trent gave to them, the students hope to donate fresh garden produce they grow to both the Cozy Café – a community project based in the Catshill Meadow – and Catshill foodbank.

Anyone who can help the project by donating any tools, time or materials can contact the college by emailing [email protected] or by calling 01527 871511 ext 319.
