A BROMSGROVE leisure centre is among hundreds across England to receive government funding to help with increasing operating costs.

Bromsgrove Sport and Leisure Centre has received £24,032 from the Swimming Pool Support Fund, which has been given to pools and centres who have seen significant reductions in usage or are most at risk of closure.

The fund, announced on November 4, recognises swimming’s importance as part of an active lifestyle and will see 196 leisure centres and swimming pools in 103 local authorities benefit from a share of £20 million pounds.

Wayne Desmond, Contract Manager at Bromsgrove Sport & Leisure Centre said: “We’re delighted to have been awarded the funding, which will go a long way in helping to go towards the increases in energy and maintenance costs.

“We’re extremely grateful to Bromsgrove District Council for submitting a bid.

“The funds which will help us to continue to provide excellent swimming facilities and our award-winning swimming lessons. Most importantly, children and adults of all ages can be more active.”

Bromsgrove’s MP, Sajid Javid said: “I am delighted that Bromsgrove Leisure Centre is being supported by this extra funding. I know how important local facilities are to residents, which is why I work closely with Ministers in Westminster.”

“Alongside the recent funding for the High Street and the A38, this is another boost for Bromsgrove town centre, which I am proud to champion with local partners.”

The government recently published its new sport strategy to get 2.5 million more adults and one million more young people meeting the Chief Medical Officer’s guidance of 150 minutes per week for adults, and 60 minutes per day for young people by 2030.

Sports minister, Stuart Andrew said: “Leisure centres and pools are vital for millions of people to stay fit and healthy, and we know that many public swimming pools are experiencing greater pressure due to increased operating costs.

“We have heard their concerns and have stepped in to help them make ends meet.

“This is part of our support for grassroots sports facilities.”
