A FUND-RAISING appeal launched by Bromsgrove’s Charlies Kebab House for those caught up in the Turkey earthquakes has raised more than £2,600 in just four days.
We reported on our front page and website how Bekir Babir, who owns the Worcester Road takeaway, and his cousin Bekir Gungormez, who also works there, wanted to generate £10,000 for the cause. The pair have lost both family and friends in the disaster and want to do all they can to help
By yesterday, figures shwed 33,000 people had died following the quakes in Turkey and North Syria which erupted around 4am on Monday.
The pair have family living in the city of Kahramanmaras and the village of Tevekkeli Koyu.
Mr Gungormez said: “We will just be grateful for anything anyone can donate to the fund-raising page.
“We have always found the people living here to be so generous and we are hoping they will give to this important cause.”
Mr Gungormez and Mr Babir are due to fly out to Turkey today (Monday) with the funds raised so far to provide immediate aid and assistance to those who need it and assess the situation and find out what is most urgently needed from then on.
Funds donated after from now on will then be used to purchase those supplies.
Mr Gungormez and Mr Babir are both paying for the flights themselves so all the funds raised can be used for aid.
