Fitness fanatics can brave the annual Easter fun run

FITNESS fanatics are being called to get their running shoes on for the annual Headway Easter Fun Run.

Headway Birmingham and Solihull’s annual race around Cofton Park will see runners take on a 5km course around paved pathways, fields and woodland trails through the park on April 2.

Organisers are promising the event will be extra special this year with an all-new medal design created by a client who attends the brain injury centre.

Mark Hannaby, who goes to Headway’s Rednal centre, put his photography, computer-aided design skills and sense of humour to the test when he was tasked with creating a number of medal designs for this year’s run.

Mark was left with life-changing injuries in 1996 when his motorbike was in collision with a lorry, leaving him with serious physical injuries, a serious brain injury and unable to remember anything of his life before the accident.

He said: “I was overwhelmed to start with.

“Many of my issues seemed trivial but coming to Headway has really helped, and being around others who ‘get it’ makes such a difference.

“They don’t judge – they just know, and we all benefit from sharing our experiences of coping with life after brain injury.”

Mark says Headway’s brain injury services have been a key part in this recovery and the charity has given him access to ‘the real life help he needs’, helping him re-learn to read and write as well a programme to stimulate his mind and memory.

As in previous years, the cost of the medal has been sponsored by expert financial advisors Frenkel Topping, allowing more of the proceeds from the event to go directly towards Headway’s local brain injury services.

Easter-themed fancy dress is optional and there will be prizes awarded for the best costume as well as for the first male, female and Under 12s finishers.

Entry is £12 for adults and £8 for under 12s, with all participants receiving a full-size chocolate Easter egg and of course, the unique Easter-themed medal.
