A FINAL call has been made for people to sign a petition to ‘save Bromsgrove’s greenbelt’ before it is handed into Parliament later this month.
The call has been made by Bromsgrove MP Bradley Thomas, who launched his Parliamentary petition back in July.
The petition claims the formula used to calculate the 85 per cent increase in Bromsgrove’s housing target was ‘flawed’ and calls on it to be justified.
It also demands that the increase is reversed, in addition to the reversal of the reduction in Birmingham’s housing target, to ensure the burden is shared in a fair and proportionate way, and only allows new houses to be built when the accompanying infrastructure is provided.
Mr Thomas claims the Government has made the decision to reduce Birmingham’s target by 31 per cent despite the city having at least 140 hectares of brownfield land that could be built on.
Bromsgrove District is 89 per cent greenbelt and 79 per cent rural.
Mr Thomas will be presenting his Parliamentary petition in the House of Commons on Tuesday, November 25.
More than 5,600 people have signed it so far, and Mr Thomas has called for those who haven’t added their signature to do so by 5.30pm on Monday, November 24.
After it is presented to Parliament, the text of the petition is sent to the Government department responsible, and it will then respond within two months.
Mr Thomas said: “This is the last opportunity for residents to sign my Parliamentary petition to save our greenbelt ahead of me presenting it in the House of Commons later this month.
“Let’s speak loudly with one voice to tell the Government that we do not want our greenbelt built on in the name of a flawed housing figure.
“Instead, the Government must reverse our increase, reverse the reduction in Birmingham’s target, build on brownfield first and, where houses are built, provide communities with the infrastructure they need before any houses are built.”
