Fair housing policy at centre of the Bromsgrove Green Party's election pledge

A FAIR housing policy for all is at the centre of the Green Party’s drive for seats in the forthcoming local elections in Bromsgrove.

The Greens are fielding nine candidates in the district with Lee Rowley standing in Rock Hill, Peter Harvey in Marlbrook, Jill Harvey in Cofton, Julian Gray in Rubery South, John Smout in Tardebigge Nick Trow in Aston Fields, Martin Ball in Alvechurch Village, and Matthew Tovey in Drakes Cross, currently held by Wythall Residents’ Association candidate Susan Baxter who will be defending her seat.

Green Party’s Peter Harvey said: “Everyone deserves a place that they can call home.

“That’s why we want to see changes across the housing sector, to create fairer, greener communities.

“Many residents are faced with homes that are unaffordable to buy, unaffordable to rent and unaffordable to heat.

“We need our council and the government to work together to deliver quality, affordable housing in the right places where people live and work, with the right supporting infrastructure and local facilities.

“Communities in Bromsgrove are facing the same problems as people up and down the country – with developers being allowed to build houses that local people often can’t afford, and failing to ensure local services like buses and GP surgeries get the investment they need.

“Developers are being allowed to ride roughshod over the needs of communities and the environment. And this has got to stop.”

Nationally the Green Party has 563 elected councillors across England and Wales and will defend 281 of them at this year’s local elections.

Their push comes at a time when people have been hit by rising food and fuel costs amid growing evidence of increasing inequality across the UK.

Make sure you’re ID OK for Polling Day

AS VOTERS head to the polls on Thursday, May 4, people are being reminded to take their voter ID.

For the first time this year, those casting their ballot in person will need to show identification to prove who they are at the polling station.

Research suggests up to a third of voters in the West Midlands are still unaware of the need for ID.

Among the accepted types are a UK, European Economic Area (EEA) or Commonwealth passport, a driving licence issued by the UK, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man or an EEA state, a blue badge and a concessionary travel pass, such as an older person’s bus pass.

Visit the Electoral Commission website at electoralcommission.org.uk/voterID for the full list of accepted photo ID.
